Major fire at former bread factory in Schwechat
A fire broke out on the site of the former hammer bread factory in Schwechat on Sunday night. The emergency services were alerted at around 2 am. Several fire departments battled the flames for hours.
The fire was only brought under control shortly before 9 a.m. on Sunday, the Bruck an der Leitha district fire brigade reported on Facebook. According to a fire department spokesperson, there had already been a fire at the industrial building just over a year ago.
This time, the directly adjacent, vacant building of the then burning part of the factory caught fire for as yet unknown reasons, according to the Schwechat fire brigade.
Support from Vienna
In addition to several volunteer fire departments from the district of Bruck an der Leitha, support was also provided from the Austrian capital to fight the fire. The Vienna professional fire department was deployed with six vehicles.
The experience gained from the fire at the former bread factory in March 2023 helped in the current operation, according to the Schwechat fire brigade. All forces were bundled together on the approach and divided up logistically. Supplementary forces - including the Ebergassing fire department and the Schwechat brewery fire department - were also alerted for the 600-metre-long supply line from the Schwechat River.
Roof cladding opened
Experience has shown that the fire could have been prevented from spreading further. With the help of an aerial rescue vehicle and two turntable ladder vehicles, the roof cladding was opened in order to carry out a targeted extinguishing attack using foam concentrate.
The fire was extinguished after around eight hours. A total of six fire departments with 144 members were deployed.
