Viennese man flees from apartment with burning jacket

A man almost went up in flames himself in a kitchen fire in an apartment in Vienna-Favoriten on Thursday night. The 31-year-old fled the building with a burning jacket. Fortunately, he managed to remove his clothing himself.  

The fire victim was able to tear the garment from his body in the stairwell, the fire department and Vienna Rescue Service reported on Thursday. The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, burns and suspected smoke inhalation.

The fire apparently broke out in the 31-year-old's kitchen shortly before midnight. It is likely that his jacket caught fire. 

Tenants had to be brought outside
The fire department was deployed with six vehicles and 27 people. Other tenants had to be taken outside during the incident - eleven of them had to be looked after by the special task force of the professional rescue service. After checking for possible embers, they were all able to return to their apartments.
