DFB Cup: Will Saarbrücken’s madness continue?
1. FC Kaiserslautern has stopped the sensational run of German third-division soccer club 1. FC Saarbrücken in the DFB Cup and can now dream of a third triumph after 1990 and 1996.
The relegation-threatened second-division club won the semi-final 2-0 away from home on Tuesday to reach the final for the eighth time in the club's history. Marlon Ritter (53) and Almamy Touré (75) scored the goals.
The Red Devils' opponents in the final will be decided on Wednesday between Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen and second-division side Fortuna Düsseldorf. The final will take place on May 25 in Berlin.
Sensation failed to materialize
The underdogs Saarbrücken, who had previously sensationally eliminated FC Bayern, Eintracht Frankfurt and Mönchengladbach, failed to qualify for the final as only the fourth third division team in the almost one hundred year history of the competition. Only the amateurs of Hertha BSC (1993), Energie Cottbus (1997) and 1. FC Union Berlin (2001) have previously achieved this feat.
