Heart problems! Carinthian footballer ends his career

His love of soccer was great - but his heart was no longer in it. Köttmannsdorf's Carinthian League defender Marco Spendier has to hang up his kicking boots - at the age of just 23 for health reasons.
"I always felt a twinge in my chest and heart region when I was under a lot of strain. It often lasted up to two minutes - at some point I thought I had to have it checked out medically," says the Rosental native.
Heart muscle too weak
And that's when he recently received the devastating diagnosis. "My heart muscle is too weak, it's hereditary - if I continue to do competitive sport, it could be fatal. Four doctors have confirmed to me that it would be life-threatening," sighs Spendier, who admittedly did not find the decision to end his career easy. "I've been playing soccer since I was five years old - quitting from one day to the next is tough." The only positive thing is that Spendier can now concentrate on completing his evening school-leaving certificate.
