Traffickers arrested: Five people in the car

On Thursday evening, a man from Kazakhstan was arrested at the border with Slovenia in Spielfeld in southern Styria on suspicion of smuggling people. He had a total of five people in the vehicle who were unable to identify themselves.

During a routine border check in Spielfeld on the A9 motorway, a 46-year-old driver from Kazakhstan was stopped by Styrian police officers. He was able to prove his identity with a Kazakh passport. 

There was even someone in the trunk
His four passengers, who were also in the car with him and crossed the Austrian border, were unable to show the police any travel documents. When the trunk of the vehicle was subsequently examined, another person was found in it who was also not carrying any travel documents.

The 46-year-old was arrested on suspicion of smuggling. The five people who had entered the country illegally told the police that they were Syrian citizens and applied for international protection in Austria. They were initially detained in accordance with the Aliens Act.
