The Schkeuditzer Kreuz junction is located at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The A9 is an important north-south highway connecting Berlin and Munich.

According to the report, the Flixbus left the road on the right for an as yet unknown reason and came to a standstill on its side. Four rescue helicopters and numerous ambulances were reportedly deployed.

Meanwhile, the hospitals in the area were preparing for a major operation. The emergency room had been alerted and operating theaters and diagnostic rooms were being prepared and kept ready, said a spokesperson for the Deaconess Hospital in Leipzig on request. In addition, the control center had been informed of the capacities available for the admission of patients.

"Five people died in the accident", a police spokesperson confirmed to the German newspaper "Bild" at midday, adding that the situation at the scene was "confusing". There are also several people injured, some of them seriously. The exact number of casualties is still unclear, as is the identity of the victims.

Flixbus is concerned
The provider Flixbus was deeply affected. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this accident and their families," said a spokesperson for the company. The long-distance bus was on its way from Berlin to Zurich. According to Flixbus, there were 53 passengers and two drivers on board. The company is working closely with the local authorities and the emergency services and is doing everything it can to quickly and completely clarify the cause of the accident.

Saxony's Transport Minister Martin Dulig expressed his dismay in an initial reaction. "My thoughts are with the families of the victims and the injured. I would like to thank the many emergency services on the scene who provided rapid assistance," said the SPD politician.

Dangerous section of highway
This is not the first accident involving a coach on this section of the A9. In May 2019, a similar crash occurred just 15 kilometers further south. Back then, a coach also overturned, a woman died and more than 70 people were injured, some of them seriously.
