Kitchen fire in Straden: one-year-old child injured

There was a kitchen fire in Straden in south-eastern Styria on Tuesday evening. A cardboard box next to a wood-burning stove caught fire. A one-year-old boy and his parents were slightly injured - the father was able to prevent the worst thanks to his great courage.

It was a completely normal evening for the young parents and their two children. At around 3 p.m., the 32-year-old mother had stoked up the wood-burning stove in the kitchen, and in the early evening she added a few more logs. She then went into the living room with her 48-year-old husband and their young son, her five-year-old son had already gone to bed.

But the evening's rest was disturbed by a rumbling noise: the 48-year-old father heard a noise in the kitchen at around half past seven - when he checked, he found that the kitchen was on fire. A cardboard box standing next to the stove had started to burn.

Parents and child slightly injured
The father proved his courage by grabbing the burning box and running outside. Although he burned himself in the process, he was able to prevent worse. After first aid, the 48-year-old was taken to Graz Regional Hospital and his one-year-old son was taken to the children's hospital as a precaution. No further details are known about possible injuries or smoke inhalation. The property damage has yet to be estimated.
