Narrow defeat
“Very bitter”: ÖFB U19s miss out on European Championship qualification
Austria's U19 national soccer team has failed to qualify for this summer's European Championship finals in Northern Ireland. They suffered a painful defeat against Spain.
The ÖFB selection was beaten 2:1 by Spain in the decisive match in Lendava on Tuesday. The Spaniards (7 points) thus won Group I in Slovenia ahead of the hosts (4), Austria and Kosovo (3 each). The goal for the Austrians came from a Gonzalez own goal (82). Only the group winners advanced.
Many sad faces
ÖFB coach Oliver Lederer probably said at the end what many were thinking. "Right now it's just very, very bitter. It's a tournament, we really wanted to win and get to the final round. We didn't manage that today. That's why there are so many sad faces so soon after the game," explained the coach.
However, they had shown "really good performances" in all three games. Even against the Spaniards. "I don't think it's happened that often that Spain have been dominated like they were today in the first half."
