Champions League
Dortmund vs PSV Eindhoven LIVE from 9pm
Albeit with some trepidation at the end: Borussia Dortmund have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League! BVB won the second leg of the round of 16 at home against PSV Eindhoven 2:0 with Marcel Sabitzer and advanced with an aggregate score of 3:1. PSG, Bayern, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal and FC Barcelona had previously advanced to the last eight.
The hosts got off to a flying start in Dortmund. Ian Maatsen was denied by PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez (2nd), but seconds later Jadon Sancho sent a low shot from the edge of the box via the inside of the bar. BVB kept the pressure on, with Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen failing to beat Benitez (16').
The Netherlands dictated proceedings in the second half
Dortmund's momentum waned after around 20 minutes, with the Dutch clearly dictating proceedings in the second half. Hirving Lozano was unlucky with a shot off the bar (53') and BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved a top chance from Johan Bakayoko (71').
Dortmund had nothing more to offer with the exception of a goal from Niclas Füllkrug (77') that was disallowed for offside by the VAR, but saved the narrow lead over time. Luuk de Jong missed the big chance to make it 1:1 and thus force extra time, the striker shooting over from a few meters. Marco Reus practically sealed the deal on the counter-attack after a serious mistake by Isaac Babadi Pavani (95').
The elimination of Eindhoven means that only Arsenal can prevent Red Bull Salzburg from taking part in the 2025 Club World Cup. Should the Gunners fail to win the Champions League, Austria's serial champions would be guaranteed a place at the tournament in the USA.
