VIENNESE TEACHER TAKES PART
Medal record for deaf Olympic athletes
At the Winter Olympics for the deaf in Erzurum, Turkey, Austria's team won ten medals. A new record! Melissa Köck from Carinthia won five gold medals in five races! Lisa Zörweg, who works as a teacher in Vienna, picked up two medals on the snowboard.
Deaf athletes have been holding their own Winter Olympics since 1949. Back then, Austria was not only the first host city with Seefeld, but as a traditional skiing nation, it is of course always one of the hottest medal contenders. Ten medals, six of them gold - but that's never happened before!
"I'm very happy and proud," commented snowboarder Zörweg on her silver in the parallel slalom and bronze in the banked slalom. She teaches at the Federal Institute for Deaf Education in Vienna's 13th district of Hietzing.
With a total of ten medals, Austria ended up in third place in the rankings. Skiing ace Melissa Köck became the most successful athlete of the Games with her incredible five gold medals.
