“Something special”: teenager gets F1 cockpit?
Ferrari teenager Oliver Bearman caused a stir in Saudi Arabia on Saturday with a tremendous Formula 1 debut. The Formula 1 world is amazed, and now the 18-year-old even has the chance of a regular cockpit next year.
"It was immediately clear to me and most of us that he was something special, you know, it's not just the speed. It's just the overall package - and he understands the goals, he's done very well," enthused Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu. Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen are currently chasing points for the racing team. However, there is already speculation that the young Bearman will be given a regular cockpit at Haas next year.
In Jeddah, however, Komatsu refused to be drawn into the cards. "I think that's a very unfair question, to be honest. Because Kev drove great today. Okay, apart from the penalty, Kev put in a fantastic performance today," emphasized the Japanese driver. "Nico also delivered today. So how can I sit here and say that Bearman will be 'our driver for next year' based on today's performance."
Points on debut
"Ollie" Bearman, who started the race in eleventh place, became the youngest Ferrari driver in Formula 1 history and scored six points straight away. Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko, who has already discovered several world champions and super talents, was also delighted. "Bearman has been thrown in at the deep end. It's certainly not an easy track, flawless and sensational," said Marko, full of praise. "You can only congratulate him. You can see that you have to give young people a chance."
