Peter Bachmann is a driving technique trainer with the police - and helps traumatized car and motorcycle drivers back on the road.

In 2022, there were 34,869 accidents on Austria's roads with 370 fatalities and 43,262 injuries. It is therefore not surprising that in many cases psychological trauma occurs after such experiences. Peter Bachmann can be a savior in times of need.

The Styrian is a federal driving technique trainer for the Austrian police, has also been working as an instructor at the Red Bull Ring for more than a decade and also trains bodyguards and special units from neighboring countries. "I train around 800 people a year or train with them," the father of two tells the "Krone" newspaper. Bachmann himself travels 25,000 kilometers a year on his motorcycle and around 60,000 by car. The expert is experiencing one worrying phenomenon more and more often: "Many people have a fear of driving. Fear of the freeway, panic when parking or great uncertainty in heavy traffic." These fears can ultimately turn driving a motorcycle or car into a real nightmare.

The experienced motorcycle police officer and driving technician has never let go of this topic and deals with it on a daily basis. That is why, in addition to his police service, the Styrian also trained as a life and social counselor. "Insecurity in traffic is on the rise, but many people don't dare to say it."

Tears often flow for those affected
The 47-year-old knows that the cases are very different. They are often experiences such as falls or accidents - whether as a victim or as an eyewitness. "Tears often flow during the coaching sessions, as various traumas and states of anxiety come up. Experiences from childhood often only come to the surface as an adult." One example: "A woman gave her husband, who had been in a coma for a long time after a terrible accident, motorcycle training as a present. The man was tense, insecure and desperate because the others in the group were faster and safer on the road. Among other things, I told him: 'Ride at the pace where you can smile all the time!' His confidence came back bit by bit - after two hours he was riding through the bends relaxed, confident and smiling."

How does Bachmann try to help? "It ranges from confrontation therapy, resilience training, developing positive affirmations and mental resilience to visualization and imagination." But - and this is very important to the expert - "always in conjunction with driving technique training. Strengthening driving skills in combination with tailored mental training leads to the best results".
