Shock while hiking: 62-year-old discovers dead body

A 62-year-old hiker was just about to take a break on the Schafberg when he made a gruesome discovery: a person was lying below the Purtschellersteig trail. An emergency doctor, who was roped down to the motionless body by helicopter, had to confirm: It was a corpse.

The 62-year-old from the district of Gmunden was on his way up the Schafberg to the Purtschellersteig on Thursday. Because he was unable to continue due to snowfields, he took a break and sat down. But the rest didn't last long: the 62-year-old discovered a motionless body below him.

Emergency doctor roped down
The hiker called for help immediately. After a short search flight, the "Christophorus 6" rescue helicopter was able to locate the lying person and lower an emergency doctor into the steep terrain. Unfortunately, the doctor was only able to determine that the man had died.

Victim identified
It was only a day later that the identity of the body could be established beyond doubt after a police helicopter team found a rucksack in the terrain - containing the ID of a 50-year-old Styrian. According to the police, the mountaineer probably slipped in a snow field on Wednesday, fell over a ten to 15 meter high wall and slipped even further in steep grassy terrain. The Styrian did not survive this tragic accident.
