Spain premiere winner of the Women’s Nations League
Spain's footballers have won the inaugural Women's Nations League!
The world champions beat Austria's group opponents France 2:0 in the final in Seville on Wednesday. World player Aitana Bonmatí (32) and Mariona Caldentey (53) fired the team of coach Montse Tomé to the title. It was the Spaniards' first ever victory against France after 13 previous unsuccessful attempts. In the semi-final, the team led by captain Irene Paredes had beaten the Netherlands 3-0 to book their place at the Olympics.
Germany is the third European team to get a taste of the Olympics!
France is already seeded to host the Summer Games in Paris. Germany will be the third European team to get a taste of the Olympic air. The DFB team came out on top 2:0 against the "Oranje Leeuwinnen" in the match for third place in Heerenveen. Klara Bühl (66') and Lea Schüller (78') made the difference after the break.
It was also decided on Wednesday who would secure their place in League A in the play-offs for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. With Norway (from the Austrian group), Belgium, Iceland and Sweden, all of the third-placed teams in the top tier won against a team from League B and were therefore able to secure their place in the play-offs. These teams are therefore also possible opponents for Austria in the draw on Tuesday (1pm) in Nyon.
A cracker from the quartet of France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain also awaits from the first pot, while the Czech Republic, Finland, Poland and Ireland, all promoted from League A, are in Pot 4. European champions England, Denmark and Italy, all of whom are drawn from pot 2, are out of the running.
