Operation on the Schneeberg
Man (50) swept away by avalanche: seriously injured
At the weekend, an alpinist was swept away by an avalanche on the Schneeberg (Lower Austria). The emergency services were also called to an avalanche on the Hochkar with a buried person.
A 50-year-old man from the district of Wiener Neustadt had climbed through the approximately 40 degree steep Lahningries on the Schneeberg in the midday hours on Saturday. In doing so, he may have triggered a dry slab avalanche. The alpinist was swept away by the avalanche at an altitude of around 300 meters.
According to the regional police directorate, he was fortunately not buried, but an emergency medical team flew the Lower Austrian to the Wiener Neustadt regional hospital with serious injuries.
Operation on the Hochkar
The Göstling mountain rescue team was also alerted to an avalanche in the Grosses Kar area on the Hochkar. One person was buried. His companion was able to dig the victim out in time. The man was not injured in the avalanche.
The off-piste skier himself is likely to have triggered the avalanche. He was swept along the entire slope and finally buried in the run-out area of the avalanche cone, according to eyewitnesses.
