The CEO of Google parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, believes a global set of rules for the use of artificial intelligence is necessary. "We need international rules for artificial intelligence. That's why we should think about a transatlantic framework, or even better: a global framework," said Pichai.

The company boss welcomed the EU's planned AI Act in an interview with the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". "In its current form, the AI Act strikes a good balance between innovation and responsible protective measures. This balance should be maintained as we move through the legislative process," said Pichai.

EU "AI Act" on the home straight
Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU countries agreed on the regulation of AI in December after lengthy negotiations. At the beginning of February, representatives of the EU member states also agreed to the proposal. Now the EU Parliament still has to approve it.

In future, AI systems are to be divided into different risk groups. The higher the potential risks of an application, the higher the requirements should be. The hope is that the rules will be copied worldwide.

We will need people who ask the big language models the right questions.

When asked whether many jobs will not disappear as a result of artificial intelligence, Pichai replied: "First of all, I believe that artificial intelligence will create new jobs." For example, people will be needed "to ask the big language models the right questions. A whole new type of profession will emerge. But of course, certain jobs will also be displaced. That's why we as a society need to work on qualifications and ensure that we retrain people when necessary. We need to put safety nets in place."
