Inflation fell to 4.5 percent in January

Inflation fell to 4.5 percent in January. According to Statistics Austria, this is the lowest figure since 2021. In December, inflation had still amounted to 5.6 percent.

The main reasons for the sharp fall were reductions in household energy and electricity prices in particular. Fuel prices have also not risen as sharply as in previous months.

Significant price increases for rents and restaurants
On the other hand, prices for restaurants and hotels continued to rise significantly by an average of 9.1%. This made them the most important driver of inflation year-on-year.

Rents also rose by an average of 9.1 percent. Prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by an average of 5.4%, slightly less than in December.
