Two instead of one! Surprise at the maned wolves
On Christmas Eve, Salzburg Zoo was delighted to welcome a new addition to the family of maned wolves. When the young animal explored the outdoor enclosure for the first time, a second pup appeared! The keepers knew nothing about him until now.
"We initially thought that we only had one cub and were more than surprised that we now have a double reason to be happy," explains Managing Director Sabine Grebner.
While the two cubs, whose sexes are not yet known, have been exclusively indoors for the past few weeks and were therefore not visible, they are now getting a little braver by the day. "They are now eight weeks old and have been making short trips to the outdoor enclosure since the weekend," summarizes Grebner.
Fathers look after their offspring
"We saw them for the first time for just a few seconds three weeks ago. After that, we didn't see them again until recently. Obviously the parents thought it was still too early. You could see them pulling their young back into the indoor area with their paws," concludes the Managing Director of Salzburg Zoo. Incidentally, the fathers of the animals from Central and South America also look after their offspring.
The parents, five-year-old Pinto and Nebulina of the same age, have been living at Salzburg Zoo since fall 2020.
