Police officers in Germany have made an unusual discovery during a night-time vehicle check. They seized 40 kilograms of wild garlic bulbs. The man now faces prosecution for violating the German Federal Nature Conservation Act.

The police officers in Lower Saxony, Germany, were quite astonished when they found two plastic bags full of wild garlic bulbs in a man's car in a parking lot for hikers.

No more personal use!
The 30-year-old Czech stated that he had come all the way from Gelsenkirchen, around 200 kilometers away, to dig up the bulbs in the forest area. These were for his own use, he claimed.

Picking herbs and wild plants from non-protected areas is permitted in small quantities. However, 40 kilograms is no longer for personal use, the police said in a press release. It is therefore assumed that there was a commercial background in this case.
