Driver uninjured
Car suddenly burst into flames on the A2
At around 5.30 p.m. on Friday, the Pitten and Neunkirchen Stadt fire departments (Lower Austria) were alerted to a vehicle fire on the A2 between Gleissenfeld and the Seebenstein junction.
Several emergency calls had previously been received, each with different locations and directions of travel. The burning car was finally found on the A2 towards Vienna shortly before Seebenstein.
Theoccupants were able to escape from the car
When the first emergency services arrived, the car was already fully engulfed in flames. Due to the enormous heat development, the nearby embankment had also started to burn. Fortunately, both occupants were able to escape from the vehicle in time and remained uninjured.
The Pitten fire department used heavy breathing protection and extinguishing foam to quickly extinguish the flames. The blazing car battery posed an additional challenge. For the extinguishing work, the highway police completely closed off sections of the A2.
The operation lasted almost two hours
The burnt-out car was loaded by crane after the extinguishing work was completed. The driver and his passenger were uninjured. There was a four-kilometer-long tailback.
After just over an hour, the wreckage was removed from the scene of the accident and the highway was reopened to traffic.
