A clear “Njet” from Moscow

Berlin is prepared to deploy German soldiers as a peacekeeping force in a buffer zone between Russian and Ukrainian troops should a ceasefire be reached, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently said. She is probably quite alone in Germany with this opinion.

In Europe, too, the willingness to theoretically join such a force is likely to be rather low. The Italians have so far refused, as have the Balts and now the Poles. Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently gave French President Emmanuel Macron a rebuff when he campaigned for such a "European peacekeeping force" during a visit to Warsaw. The Polish head of government said that such actions were not currently being planned.

And the Americans under their new president certainly have no interest in this either. Donald Trump has already made that clear.

He's right, the whole idea is absurd. Russia goes to war because it doesn't want to see NATO troops in Ukraine, and then some people want to put together a "peacekeeping force" consisting exclusively of NATO soldiers?

A clear "no" from Moscow is already a foregone conclusion. If so, such a force would have to consist of UN soldiers from Asia, South America and Africa...
