China takes antitrust action against Nvidia

The Chinese authorities are taking antitrust action against the US chip manufacturer Nvidia. The market regulator has launched an investigation into alleged violations of anti-monopoly laws by Nvidia, the Chinese state television station CCTV reported on Monday. The conflict between the USA and China over semiconductor technologies is thus intensifying further.

The US wants to make it more difficult for China to access state-of-the-art computer chips that are used in advanced weapons systems and for artificial intelligence. Beijing is therefore accusing Washington of "obstructing normal economic and trade exchanges" and "politicizing and weaponizing economic, trade and technological issues".

At the beginning of last week, Washington further restricted the export of technologies and software for chip production and development to China. Beijing responded with new restrictions on the export of raw materials important for semiconductor production to the USA. Nvidia is by far the largest manufacturer of GPU chips (graphics cards), which are considered indispensable for the development of generative AI.
