Cyclist seriously injured in collision with train

A serious accident occurred in Eben on Thursday afternoon. A cyclist was hit by a train on an unrestricted level crossing. The man suffered serious injuries. 

An 80-year-old local man tried to cross an unrestricted level crossing in Eben im Pongau on his e-bike on Thursday. As the sun was already low in the afternoon, the man is unlikely to have seen the red light of the traffic lights or the approaching train. The 59-year-old train driver immediately initiated emergency braking and sounded the horn. Nevertheless, the train hit the cyclist. The 80-year-old suffered serious injuries. He was treated by two emergency doctors for around an hour and then flown to Salzburg Regional Hospital.

A crisis intervention team from the Salzburg Red Cross was also at the scene of the accident for the train attendant and the passengers.

The level crossing concerned is secured with a traffic light system. Due to this accident, ÖBB once again appeals to all road users to be particularly attentive at railroad crossings.

The train was able to continue its journey after the injured person had been rescued and the accident had been recorded. The exact circumstances of the accident were not yet known.
