Mega traffic jam at the Brenner Pass: highway closed since the morning

Anyone wanting to cross the Brenner Pass had to reckon with long delays on Saturday morning. Due to two roadworks, traffic was only moving in one lane. It took four hours to drive from Sterzing to Gries am Brenner and up to two hours southbound. 

On the Brenner highway, you had to be patient and have good nerves on Saturday. Around four hours were lost at times heading north, with traffic jams in the Wipptal valley, especially from the Obernberg bridge to Matrei am Brenner.

"There is no end in sight, but the situation has thankfully eased somewhat since the truck driving ban, which has been in place since 3 p.m.," the executive told the Tiroler Krone newspaper.

The reason for the traffic jam is two roadworks, which means that the road can only be used in one lane in both directions at times. On the Luegbrücke bridge, roadworks are taking place and there is also a construction site at the border tunnel on the Brenner Pass.
