Jonas (16) appreciates digital production & manual work

Jonas (16) is in his 2nd year of training as a mechanical engineering technician in Krems. The apprentice particularly enjoys working on various workpieces at voestalpine.

Jonas from Rohrendorf near Krems opted for an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineering technician because it is varied and combines various digital and analog working techniques. In the first year of his apprenticeship, he was able to familiarize himself with a wide variety of techniques - from filing and milling to welding and turning, 3D printing and programming a robot. Before his apprenticeship, Jonas completed secondary school and then the polytechnic in Krems.

For the 16-year-old, whose grandfather worked at voestalpine for 40 years, it was clear for a long time that he wanted to do his apprenticeship in mechanical engineering: "I've tried out other fields, but metalworking has always been my favorite. A lot of things are automated, but I still like creating workpieces with my own hands," says Jonas, who would like to become a master craftsman after completing his apprenticeship.

"As a mechanical engineering technician, I design, plan and build various machines, devices and systems that are used in industry."

Jonas advises prospective apprentices to look at different professions: "Maybe even something you don't think you're interested in."

Around 150 young professionals are trained at the voestalpine sites in Lower Austria. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
