voestalpine: Fit for the future as a mechanical engineer

The voestalpine Group is the largest industrial apprentice trainer in Upper Austria. Damir is currently in his second year of apprenticeship in mechanical engineering.

Damir decided to train at voestalpine after a factory tour from the polytechnic. He attends the vocational school together with ten boys and two girls. In his first year, the prospective mechanical engineering technician was able to get a taste of a wide variety of areas.

"During the basic training, we had a wide variety of tasks depending on the department - for example, sheet metal processing from sketching to cutting to bending, or pipe connections from cutting to size to attaching threads to testing for leaks," says the 17-year-old, who has all options open to him after graduation: "I'm doing the apprenticeship with a school-leaving certificate, so afterwards I could also complete the evening technical college or take the master craftsman's examination."

The Linz native particularly likes the fact that he can put his precision to good use - "this has been demonstrated with workpieces in the tolerance range. During basic training, we were also allowed to take home the pieces we made ourselves, such as a vice or cell phone holder." What does he like less? "When we have too little to do," laughs Damir.

Around 400 young professionals are currently being trained at the state-of-the-art training center in Linz. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
