On the normal route from the Lucknerhaus, two East Tyrolean mountaineers, aged 58 and 53, were on their way to conquer the Grossglockner in the early hours of Saturday morning. During the rope-free ascent in the direction of Eisleitl, an accident occurred at around 5am. 

"The 53-year-old man got his crampons caught on his lower leg and fell in the steep, icy terrain," reports the police. The mountaineer fell 200 meters and remained seriously injured at an altitude of around 3,600 meters.

"His mountain friend immediately made an emergency call and descended to the accident site to provide first aid," said the police. "At the same time, mountain guides climbed up to the accident site." Together, they treated the seriously injured man until the rescue services arrived.

With the support of the mountain rescue team, mountain guides and Alpine police, the "Christophorus 11" rescue helicopter and the "Libelle" police helicopter set about the rescue.

"Under the most difficult conditions, the crew of the emergency helicopter 'C11' managed a rope rescue. The seriously injured man was then flown to Lienz Hospital," concluded the police. His mountain companion was rescued by the police helicopter.
