European Championship upset: fans demand a replay

After the bitter quarter-final exit at the home EURO against Spain, the Germans are struggling with a penalty that was not awarded. Now DFB fans are even calling for a replay by means of a petition.

After losing 2-1 to Spain in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart on Friday, hosts Germany mourned a penalty that was not awarded in the 106th minute. Marc Cucurella had blocked a shot from Jamal Musiala with his forearm.

Now the fans want a replay. More than 300,000 people have already joined the (probably hopeless) online petition. It calls for the match to be replayed. There is talk of "many wrong decisions" by English referee Anthony Taylor.

 The German media saw the reason for the elimination in the penalty that was not given. "Penalty cheating! For us, you're the winners," was the headline in "Bild". And the "B.Z." wrote: "Penalty rage! England referee denies us a clear handball penalty".

There were also one or two international headlines. The Italian "Gazzetta dello Sport" ran the headline: "EURO scandal! This penalty was not given to Germany. What a mockery for the Germans."
