Thunderstorms threaten

Summer is now approaching with more than 30 degrees

Temperatures below 20 degrees and hardly a day without rain - this has characterized the "summer" of 2024 so far. According to the weather service Ubimet, it was too cold overall, in Innsbruck by 1.4 degrees. Now things are set to change, at least for a few days: The forecast is for bathing weather, but the fun could soon be over again. Threat of heavy thunderstorms.

"Mediterranean air will reach the Alpine region with a south-westerly current," explains Ubimet meteorologist Martin Templin. Highs of around 30 degrees are expected from Tuesday. The tendency for thunderstorms is also very low on this day.

On Wednesday, it will be midsummer in Tyrol. A foehn wind from the south will prevail in places and highs will reach 27 to 33 degrees, and it will be humid. During the course of the day, individual, quite heavy thunderstorms may develop in a northerly direction.

A "heat bubble" from North Africa will reach us on Thursday. Powerful thunderstorms are possible in the energy-rich air. Saharan dust will also be back in the mix.

On Friday, the heat will tend to move to eastern Austria. Towards the next weekend, however, it could get quite warm again, perhaps summer will even come to stay.
