First confirmed wolf kill of the mountain pasture season

As the province of Salzburg announced on Monday, there was a wolf kill in Rauris on Sunday. Eight sheep are dead, some injured.

Eight sheep are dead, four were injured. Another four animals are still missing. This picture was taken at the weekend on a mountain pasture in Rauris. "Based on the picture of the bite, we can clearly say that it was a wolf," says Salzburg wolf commissioner Hubert Stock. The fact that eight sheep fell victim to the attack is nothing out of the ordinary for Stock.

In the meantime, DNA samples have already been sent to Vienna for more detailed investigations. This could clarify whether the animal has already struck in the past.

According to the wolf commissioner, the affected mountain pasture cannot be protected from wolves. There have been repeated incidents there in recent years. What happens next with the wolf will be decided in the coming days. If the animal is classified as a wolf, it will probably only be a matter of time before it is released for shooting.
