Crash in tunnel construction site: forklift driver (41) dead!

A terrible accident in the Brenner Base Tunnel in Tyrol: a forklift driver collided with a truck in the tunnel construction site and was thrown out of the driver's cab. The 41-year-old worker suffered fatal injuries. An autopsy was ordered.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday at around 2.30 p.m. in a supply tunnel in the municipality of Steinach am Brenner.

The 41-year-old was transporting a metal pipe into the supply tunnel with a forklift truck. "For reasons as yet unexplained, the worker collided with a truck parked on the southern wall of the tunnel. The man was thrown from the driver's cab of the forklift truck," reported the police.

Autopsy ordered, forklift truck seized
All help came too late for the 41-year-old - he suffered fatal injuries in the accident. An autopsy was ordered by the public prosecutor's office.

The forklift truck was also seized. Once the investigations have been completed, reports will be submitted to the public prosecutor's office in Innsbruck, the responsible safety authority and the labor inspectorate.

Worker hit by train in March
Serious accidents have often occurred during the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel. As recently as March, a worker (57) was hit and killed by a construction train in the Sillschlucht gorge in Innsbruck.
