More trucks over the Brenner Pass than over passes in Switzerland

The Brenner Pass is and remains a "hot spot" for transit. According to the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ), 2.4 million trucks drove over the pass last year.

"That's three times as many as drove over all four Swiss Alpine crossings," the VCÖ draws a comparison and clarifies: "While Alpine transit in Switzerland has decreased by 250,000 trucks compared to 2010, the number of trucks crossing the Brenner Pass has increased by around 550,000 in the same period." The Brenner Pass therefore bears the brunt of transalpine freight traffic.

A further increase in truck traffic must be prevented in the interests of public health.

Experts sound the alarm
In view of these figures, the experts are sounding the alarm: "A further increase in HGV traffic must be prevented in the interests of public health. The EU has lowered the air pollutant limits due to the serious health risks of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. These limits cannot be achieved if truck traffic continues to increase."
