Wrong-way driver crashes into truck on Pyhrn highway

A 55-year-old was driving the wrong way on the A9 motorway on Friday afternoon. This led to a head-on collision with a truck, which ended fatally for the driver. The highway was closed for almost three hours afterwards.

It was shortly after four o'clock in the afternoon when the 55-year-old from the district of Leoben wanted to drive back onto the Pyhrnautobahn from a rest stop. However, he accidentally took the wrong slip road and a short time later was driving the wrong way on the A9 towards Liezen.

Driver died at the scene of the accident
At road kilometer 121.87, near Kammern in Liesingtal, the driver collided head-on with a truck. The 57-year-old driver from south-eastern Styria was unable to avoid the truck. 

Despite immediate rescue measures, all help came too late for the 55-year-old. He died at the scene of the accident. The A9 was closed between 4.20 p.m. and 7 p.m. due to the accident.
