“Titanic” captain Bernard Hill (79) has died
"Titanic" actor Bernard Hill died on Sunday at the age of 79 (see video above). This was reported by his management. The British-born actor became famous as Captain Edward Smith in the "Titanic" film adaptation. He also played King Théoden in "Lord of the Rings".
In director Peter Jackson's trilogy, he appeared in two films (the second and third parts). Both "Lord of the Rings" and "Titanic" were awarded the Oscar. Hill, who was born in Manchester in 1944, had his breakthrough in the early 1980s with his role as Yosser Hughes in "Boys from the Blackstuff". This was followed by appearances in the film "Gandhi" and in the BBC adaptation of Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall".
Another film in which he appeared was "Operation Valkyrie - The Stauffenberg Assassination" (2008). The Briton has also made appearances in the theater.
According to his management, Hill, who last lived north-east of London, died on Sunday morning. He is survived by his wife, actress Marianna Hill, and a son.
"Iconic and remarkable roles"
British actress and singer Barbara Dickson, who played Hill in a musical, wrote on the X platform: "It is with great sadness that I note the death of Bernard Hill. A truly wonderful actor. It was a privilege to have crossed paths with him (...)."
The Director of BBC Drama spoke of a "long career full of iconic and remarkable roles."
