Attack on SPD politician: 17-year-old turns himself in

On Friday evening, four perpetrators attacked and seriously injured Matthias Ecke (SPD), an MEP from Saxony. On Sunday night, a 17-year-old turned himself in to the police because of the attack.

The teenager is not in custody, as it cannot be assumed that he is absconding, said a spokeswoman for the State Office of Criminal Investigation in Dresden on Sunday. According to the LKA, the 17-year-old had not previously appeared before the police.

Also attack on Green Party supporters
Investigations are continuing into the other previously unknown suspects. They are still being searched for. The police are assuming a political motive. Before the attack on the SPD politician, the group had already attacked a 28-year-old man who was putting up election posters for the Green Party.

Such attacks "threaten our democracy", warned German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Saturday. "We must stand together against this," he emphasized in a post on X. "Shrugging our shoulders is never an option."
