After major operation
Water sports enthusiast dies in kayak accident
A kayak accident occurred on the Lammer in Scheffau on Saturday evening. A large contingent of emergency services from the Red Cross, fire department, mountain rescue, police and water rescue were deployed into the night. The body of the water sports enthusiast was finally found on Sunday morning.
On Sunday morning, the rescuers found the body in the area of the gorge exit. The recovery of the body was difficult and took hours. The gorge is narrow at this point and the terrain is steep, according to the water rescue team.
Kayaker hit the rocks
According to the police, the deceased was a member of a group of Czech kayakers. At a rapid and narrow section of the Lammerklamm gorge, the Czech man hit a rock and was pulled under the water. He was unable to swim back to the surface from the boat.
Search briefly called off
The search was called off at around 10 p.m. on Saturday due to the high water level, as Markus Gewolf, spokesman for Bischofshofen Water Rescue, explained. "There was a lot of meltwater in the gorge due to high temperatures and snow."
The water level then receded overnight and the search continued in the morning as planned. The helpers had already been able to narrow down the search radius. "He was in the place where we thought he was," said Gewolf.
