Hours of road closure
Truck overturned at night on the southern highway
Serious truck accident on Wednesday night on the A2, the southern highway, in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district on the Styrian-Burgenland border: a Romanian crashed his articulated truck and tore over a concrete crash barrier. The highway was closed for hours as a result. In the meantime, one southbound and one northbound lane have been reopened.
Shortly after midnight, the 49-year-old from Romania was driving a semitrailer truck on the southern highway (A2) in the direction of Vienna. Shortly before the Lafnitztal-Oberwart exit, the driver hit the lowered concrete center barrier at the construction site there for unknown reasons.
Southern highway completely closed for a short time
The vehicle then crashed onto its left side and blocked the entire lane. The injured Romanian, who was responsive, was taken to Hartberg Regional Hospital by the ambulance service.
According to Asfinag, a truck-mounted crane is required for the complex clean-up work and recovery of the truck. As soon as this arrives, the A2 will have to be closed again in both directions.
Partial closure expected to last until Thursday
The duration of the work is not yet known. This is because the concrete crash barrier, parts of which fell like dominoes over nine kilometers, must first be repaired. However, the highway operator estimates that all lanes will be open again by Thursday.
