Bayern’s tough search for a coach: what Uli Hoeneß says

The search for a coach at FC Bayern is proving more difficult than expected. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß regrets Julian Nagelsmann's rejection and criticizes the media at the same time.

"I think it's a shame, but it's not the end of the world at FC Bayern," the 72-year-old told BR24 Sport about Nagelsmann's decision to stay with the DFB.

On Friday morning, the DFB announced the extension of Nagelsmann's contract until after the 2026 World Cup. The 36-year-old was considered a hot candidate in Munich to succeed Thomas Tuchel, who will leave the German record champions at the end of the season. "This is a decision that must be respected," said Hoeneß.

Criticism of the media
And the Bayern icon also criticized the media. "I didn't quite understand that one newspaper or another thought they had the sovereignty of opinion and always acted as if everything was clear with Bayern." Hoeneß emphasized that he had never been involved in talks with any of the coaching candidates. This was because, like former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, he was only a member of the supervisory board in an advisory capacity.

"It was always the case that he (Nagelsmann, editor's note) was one of several candidates and both sides were given the opportunity to say yes or no. Now he has decided in favor of the German national team," said Hoeneß. And that had to be respected.

"Not my job"
Which coach should take over Bayern now? "That's not my job. You have to ask Christoph Freund and Max Eberl, they are responsible for the sport," Hoeneß emphasized.
