“That’s exactly why we brought Marcel to us”

Marcel Sabitzer was the hero of a magical Dortmund night with a goal and two assists in the 4:2 triumph. After a difficult start, the ÖFB star is in top form.

The magic wasn't there straight away. Not when he moved to Dortmund in the summer of 2023, where he took a long time to settle in and was criticized early on. Nor in the second leg of the quarter-final against Atletico, in which Marcel Sabitzer had the lead on his feet in the third minute but hesitated too long.

Before the Austrian was mainly responsible for Dortmund talking about a magical night in the Champions League after all. After a throw-in, the ball came to Maatsen via Sabitzer, who scored from an acute angle to make it 2:0. After the visitors had caught up, the ÖFB international then perfectly set up Füllkrug's cross to make it 3:2 and finally sent the stadium into overdrive with his spectacular shot from the edge of the box to make it 4:2. "What can you say?" asked coach Terzic with a laugh, "incredible goal, incredible run!" Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke also raved about Sabitzer: "He's shown signs of it in the last few games, now he's refined it. That's exactly why we brought him in."

Already five assists
After the familiarization period, the 30-year-old is in top form in the most important phase of the season. At the final whistle, Sabitzer was the best provider of assists in this Champions League season with five, and he is also the first Austrian to score three points in a knockout match in the top flight.

After reaching the semi-finals for the first time in eleven years, BVB can even dream of another showdown at Wembley. Paris Saint-Germain await in the semi-finals in just two weeks' time. The final will take place on June 1 in London, where they lost the clash with Bayern 1-2 in 2013. The run of success has made Sabitzer and Co. popular throughout the country - because if Germany maintains second place in the UEFA annual rankings, the Bundesliga will receive a fifth starting place. And if BVB win the trophy for the first time since 1997 and only finish fifth in the league, the sixth-placed team (currently Frankfurt; Augsburg and Freiburg have a chance) would even qualify for the Champions League.
