Failure in two sets
Rodionov against Zverev – LIVE from 12.30 pm
As expected, Yuriy Rodionov was eliminated in the round of 16 of the ATP250 tennis tournament in Munich. However, the 24-year-old from Lower Austria put up an excellent fight for a long time on Wednesday against the top-seeded world number five Alexander Zverev. In the end, Austria's number 3 and 118 in the rankings had to concede 6:7(3)2:6. However, Rodionov was able to leave the court with his head held high after his first ever duel with a top ten player.
Mainly because of his performance in the first set, as the ÖTV Davis Cup player kept up excellently and, unlike Zverev, had four break chances - at 2:2 - but the Olympic champion saved the game. At 5:4 in the German's favor, the match had to be interrupted after 44 minutes for around 2:20 hours due to the onset of hail.
After the unwanted break, the match continued in the same vein. Left-hander Rodionov made it anything but easy for the current third seed, impressed with the speed of his shots and was untouchable on serve (no break points against him). After 57 minutes of play, it almost logically went into a tie-break. In this, Zverev, who celebrates his 27th birthday on Saturday, prevailed 7:3.
Five hours until the winner was decided
At 1:0 for Rodionov and 15:0 with Zverev serving, there was another interruption in the second round at just 6 degrees. After the resumption, things moved quickly. Rodionov gave up his service games at 1:2 and 1:4, and the match was over in the early evening just under five hours after the first service. Zverev was happy to be back in the quarter-finals at one of his home tournaments for the first time since 2019. Rodionov, on the other hand, missed out on reaching an ATP quarter-final for the third time in his career. It would have been his first on clay.
His compatriot Dominic Thiem had lost 4:6, 4:6 to Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas in the first round on Monday.
