More independent from China
Every 7th iPhone 2023 already manufactured in India
Apple apparently had around one in seven iPhones manufactured in India in the past financial year, making it even less dependent on China. The news agency Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing insiders, that iPhones worth 14 billion US dollars (just under 13 billion euros) were manufactured - twice as much as in the previous financial year.
The increase suggests that the US tech giant is making greater efforts to reduce its long-standing dependence on China in the face of increasing geopolitical tensions. Apple did not wish to comment on this.
However, China remains the largest iPhone production location and is also the largest sales market for the device abroad - even if sales of Apple's most important product by far are declining: more and more foreign technology is no longer allowed to be used in the workplace, and the iPhone is also competing with smartphones from Huawei and other competitors.
Apple currently produces the iPhone model series 12 to 15 in India, but not the better-equipped Pro and Pro Max models. Most of the devices manufactured in India are exported, while only a fraction of the population uses iPhones themselves. Instead, cheaper Chinese brands dominate the local smartphone market.
