After his serious training accident on Tenerife, professional cyclist Lennard Kämna's health is making progress. The 27-year-old's condition has improved so much that he was able to leave the intensive care unit, as his German team Bora announced on Sunday.

"Lennard has taken a huge step forward. The fact that he can now be transferred to the normal ward is very good news," team manager Ralph Denk was quoted as saying.

Kämna, who has already won stages in the three grand tours Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta, suffered a severe chest trauma with rib fractures and a bruised lung, among other injuries.

Right of way taken
According to the racing team, an oncoming vehicle took Kämna's right of way when turning. Kämna was traveling with the training group at the time. He had been preparing for his Giro start at the training camp, where the former junior world champion was due to ride for the overall classification from May 4. As a result of the accident, his start in the Tour of Italy is almost certain to be ruled out.
