April weather is different: instead of rain, sun, clouds and snow all in one day, the start of April has spoiled us with a unique heatwave - even though it snowed on this date three years ago! Find out how warm it was on Saturday and what temperatures the coming days will bring here. 

Warm, warmer, hot: you won't have to look far for summer temperatures this weekend. The early summer phase will reach its peak today, Sunday, with maximum temperatures of between 25 and 29 degrees across the country.

In the Salzkammergut or in the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen region, temperatures could even crack the 30 degree mark in some places! The warm front invites you to soak up the sun, hike, eat ice cream and even swim until Tuesday, when it should cool down again. This is anything but normal for this time of year: "In the long-term average, highs of between ten and 14 degrees would be normal - half as much as on Sunday!", notes Liliane Hofer from GeoSphere Austria.

Never before has it been 30 degrees so early in Upper Austria 
"The previous daily record on April 7th was 26 degrees, the 30 degree mark has never been reached earlier than in 2012 on April 27th - three weeks later than this year - that's incredibly striking." Early summer temperatures already prevailed on Saturday (see graphic), and up to 30 degrees are also possible on Monday, although there will be a foehn wind.

The Sahara dust accompanies us again throughout the weekend, but much less than on the Easter weekend. Tuesday will also bring warm, early summer weather until the evening hours, with a westerly current with cooler air and rain showers only expected to spread in the night to Wednesday.

The beginning of April is not always warm: on April 1, 1996, it was a bitterly cold 12.8 degrees below zero in St. Wolfgang. Just three years ago, on the night of April 6, 2021, it snowed thick white flakes that even stayed on in large parts of the province.

Sun and warmth - the greatest joys for any sun worshipper, especially after the cold and dreary winter months. What could be better than relaxing in the sun for the first time, dipping your toes in the cold water, eating ice cream in shorts and being outside until late in the evening?

Despite all this, somewhere, at least in the back of my mind, an uncomfortable question arises: "Is it really supposed to be like this?" As wonderful as the weather is, there's no doubt that it's getting warmer and warmer earlier and earlier every year, with one record-breaking month after another.
