“Without money, many lack the incentive”
Baseball players start the new season this weekend . US sport is lagging behind in comparison in Austria. The players of the top clubs know the reasons for this.
Glove up - and let's go! The Baseball Bundesliga kicks off the new season this weekend. And with two real bangers: on Saturday (15), champions Neustadt welcome "runners-up" Metrostars, and on Sunday (14) the second leg takes place in Vienna. Ducks pitcher Julian Faulhaber: "The goal is to win the title again, we've developed strongly." Like the baseball association, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. "A lot has happened, especially in terms of youth development," says ABSF President Rainer Husty. "We have a strong infrastructure almost everywhere."
Compared to other US sports in Austria, however, we are still lagging behind. There are no professionals in this country. "Basketball and ice hockey have a long tradition here. And you can play football on any soccer pitch." The clubs try to attract children with "Baseball5", a simplified form that is played without a bat.
"I'm a teacher in a school and I'm going to introduce it," says Faulhaber, hoping for a boost. "Unfortunately, baseball doesn't have any figureheads like Pöltl or Raimann etc." Maybe Alex Resel will become one. The Wanderers infielder is moving to Japan in the summer to join the Be-Stars, where he will be paid for the first time. "Without money, many lack the incentive. A few players come along - but then they stop playing again quickly," sighs Resel.
