Kneeling protest in Naples after racism scandal
More than two weeks after a racist insult against their teammate Juan Jesus, the SSC Napoli footballers have protested against racism. The players of the Italian champions knelt on the pitch before Saturday's 3-0 Serie A defeat against Atalanta Bergamo.
The gesture, which was initiated by former American football pro Colin Kaepernick in the USA, has been a global symbol against racism and exclusion since 2016.
Italy international Francesco Acerbi is alleged to have racially insulted his opponent Juan Jesus during his club Inter Milan's match against Napoli. The 36-year-old was subsequently excluded from the most recent international matches, but was later acquitted of the charges by a sports tribunal due to a lack of evidence. Acerbi had denied the insults.
