Russell brutally dismantles his Mercedes
The good news first: he was apparently uninjured. But the way George Russell literally tore his Mercedes apart at the Australian Grand Prix still gave Formula 1 fans a fright, at least for a short time.
Everyone was already preparing to cross the finish line when the fans suddenly flinched on the last lap: George Russell had a wild crash. His car took off and came to rest on its side, badly battered. It looked wild, but fortunately Russell was able to get out unharmed.
Downforce lost
What had happened? The Briton lost downforce while chasing Fernando Alonso, had to brake hard, oversteered and slid into the crash barriers. The gravel bed at least took the speed out of the race, but the accident still looked violent. Despite everything, Russell was taken to hospital for examination.
It was a total loss for Mercedes. Russell's colleague Lewis Hamilton had retired early with engine damage.
