Due to the continuing high risk of terrorism, the police will be keeping a closer eye on Easter celebrations and Easter markets in the coming days. More uniformed officers and police officers in civilian clothes will be monitoring Easter fairs and markets, and special forces such as riot units and drones will also be involved.

There are no indications of a specific threat. The risk level with regard to Islamist extremism and terrorism is nevertheless still rated as "high" - the second-highest level - by the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence. "However, there are currently no indications of a specific threat," emphasized the Ministry of the Interior.

However, Easter celebrations and Easter markets are "symbols of a high Christian festival combined with gatherings of people in public spaces", which is why the Federal Police Directorate has ordered special police protection measures "to ensure that everything runs as safely as possible for all participants". This also applies to the Jewish Passover festival from April 22 to 30.

 "The police work around the clock to ensure the safety of Austrians and are also called upon at Easter. Everything is being done to provide the best possible protection for Easter markets and Easter celebrations," assured Minister Karner.
