Stellantis builds cheap Chinese electric car in Europe
According to insiders, the Chinese electric car manufacturer Leapmotor is about to build a small electric car at a Stellantis plant in Poland.
Production of the T03 small car could begin this year in the second quarter, a person familiar with the process said on Friday, according to Reuters.
Pre-assembled parts could be assembled into finished cars. Production is planned at the plant in Tychy, said a second insider. The two companies were initially unavailable for comment.
The T03 is similar in size to the recently redesigned Dacia Spring Electric, has a 41 kWh gross battery pack and is expected to achieve a WLTP range of 280 kilometers. Its drive system delivers 80 kW/109 hp and weighs just over 1200 kilograms.
In terms of software, the Leapmotor T03 appears to be well equipped, with everything from lane departure warning to automatic parking. Any updates are provided over the air.
Stellantis acquired a good fifth of the shares in Leapmotor last year. As part of the agreement, the two companies founded a joint venture. Stellantis was granted the right to build and sell Leapmotor vehicles outside of China. According to media reports, Stellantis is also considering producing the cars at its Fiat plant in Turin, Italy.
The T03 could act as a price breaker in Europe - starting at around 22,000 euros.
