Shock for 173 passengers: smoke from landing gear

The passengers were uninjured, but the excitement must have been great when smoke suddenly came out of the landing gear after landing at Innsbruck Airport. However, the Innsbruck Airport fire department quickly brought the situation under control.

After a safe landing at Innsbruck Airport on Saturday morning, an aircraft coming from England developed smoke in the area of the right main landing gear. The Innsbruck Airport fire department was alerted and cooled the landing gear. According to the police, the smoke was probably caused by a technical defect in the landing gear. No one was injured and there was no danger to anyone, they said.

"Incident unproblematic"
Martin Fleidl, Safety Manager at Innsbruck Airport, told the "Krone" newspaper that the aircraft was a Boeing 737: "It is completely normal to see some smoke from the landing gear when landing. In this case, hydraulic fluid also escaped due to a defect," says the former pilot. The defect should be able to be rectified quickly, Fleidl continues. Finally, he emphasizes that the incident was "unproblematic. Something like this can also occur with aircraft from other manufacturers".

Air traffic disrupted for 15 minutes
The aircraft with 173 passengers on board touched down in Innsbruck at 10.35 am. While the aircraft was taxiing to its assigned parking space, smoke suddenly billowed out of the right main landing gear, prompting the company fire department to take action. The extent of the damage was not yet known. Air traffic at Innsbruck Airport was only affected by the incident for around 15 minutes.
