Dispute over location
“A greenfield site looks different”
The construction of new barracks, investments in national defense and soil sealing - a mixture that is explosive. In this case in Mistelbach. The Greens in particular criticize the relocation of the barracks to the site of the former military training area outside the town of Mistelbach.
"The neighbouring district would accept investments of this magnitude with a kiss on the hand," says Mayor Erich Stubenvoll, annoyed by the criticism that modernization measures at the previous site would be sufficient.
Debate: building site is already being used
A "green field" is not being concreted over here, as the area is already partially sealed and is used for exercises, Stubenvoll points out: "The fact is that no forest is being cleared either. And if we reject the project, there will probably be more damage elsewhere if it goes ahead anyway."
Renovation of the old building hardly profitable
During another recent debate, the condition of the barracks also came up: there has just been another burst pipe and the 90-year-old site has long since been surrounded by housing estates. The bridge crossing a railroad line is so dilapidated that heavy equipment is no longer allowed to drive over it. Due to the nearby hospital with a helipad, there are also problems with drones, which are to become a focal point of the site.
"1,000 soldiers, 300 of them in the cadre and 150 conscripts and KFOR soldiers - this will be the second largest employer in the city," says Stubenvoll, not understanding those critics who are trying to prevent "this opportunity of the century" for Mistelbach.
